IHC Merwede in transition

Introduction
‘Sustainability’ is a buzzword these days. It sells well. So there is a risk that it may be used in promotional material and sales communications without meaningful action. But IHC Merwede, the market leader in the building of dredging equipment, is convinced that sustainability must involve a genuine commitment.
There are good reasons for this stance:

  • Our clients, and our client’s clients, are increasingly involved in projects where national and international legislation require environmental and social compensation. The economy is no longer the sole driver behind development. So clients demand dredging equipment that makes sustainable operations possible.
  • Over the next few years, legislation relating to emissions, ballast water, noise and other environmental loads involved in maritime activities will become much stricter [1].
  • IHC’s position as a market leader and a technology innovator places an obligation on the company: market leaders don’t follow standards, they set them.
  • There is a growing awareness that includes shipbuilders and contractors: we have an obligation to keep the planet inhabitable for our heirs.
