S.C.R Sibelco specialises in mining, refining and delivery of quartz, and is world market leader in this field. The company wins its basic material in the areas around the Belgian towns of Mol and Lommel where operations began in 1872, and near Maasmechelen. Where dredgers do the mining, these are electrically powered from the shore and often work at night to save energy costs. Single handed operation, closely guarded and, if need be, guided from the factory's computer analysing centre, is a hallmark of Sibelco's way of working. The entirely new concept of two spuds in hydraulically moved carriage and one spuds of fixed position, allow the craf to 'walk' or be kept in place while at work in waterdepths up to 18 m. In this slope dredging mode, the ladder swings on the swing pontoon. In depths beyond 18 m the ladder is fixed in the craft's centerline and can reach up to 25 m in breach dredging mode. By pulling itself forward on wires a constant flow of material is guaranteed. This dredger has achieved production levels beyond expectations in both slope dredging and breaching modes.
