Custom-built cutter suction dredgers

A solution for every challenge

IHC Merwede cutter suction dredgers are renowned for their efficiency, reliability, high production rates and complex, state-of-the-art technological features. The custom-built vessels are designed to meet individual customer requirements according to the philosophy that for every challenge, there is a solution.

Whatever the requirements, IHC Merwede customers can be assured that their vessel will be delivered on time. In addition, all products benefit from an outstanding level of service from IHC Merwede’s life-cycle support programme, as well as high performance levels.

Custom-built dredgers range in size, from smaller rock dredgers and environmentally friendly models, designed for reservoirs and lakes, to the biggest dredging vessels in the world. The large category includes: the AL SAKAB, the world’s largest stationary dredger; the MASHOUR, built specifically to construct the Suez Canal; and the QUIBIÁN I, designed specially for the construction and maintenance of the Panama Canal.

The QUIBIÁN I is a typical example of an IHC Merwede custom-built vessel. The 12,000kW mono-pontoon cutter suction dredger features an integrated spud carrier, ladder well and ladder gantry.

The vessel was built to the following important criteria: versatility, with easily adaptable dredging properties, including rock-cutting capacity; excellent mobility; maximum operational time; and additional communication possibilities with the customer’s headquarters and other vessels in the Canal.

High productivity

The result is a vessel with the capability to achieve high outputs at a relatively low cost and that is able to dredge in the challenging conditions of the Canal. The QUIBIÁN I has sufficient capacity to dredge along the entire 80-kilometre shipping route that joins the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

The AL SAKAB single-pontoon cutter suction dredger – built to Bureau Veritas rules and regulations – is a completely self-sufficient vessel that is capable of round-the-clock production. For instance, it features a full complement of accommodation for 28 people.

To help guarantee the highest possible level of productivity, the vessel can dredge in excess of 20,000m3 of rock and soil, depending on the conditions. AL SAKAB worked on the port of King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia.

Such dredging vessels demonstrate IHC Merwede’s ability to deliver innovative custom-built vessels to its customers for use on challenging projects on a global scale. The company’s international organisational structure and extensive experience mean that it can match its customers’ technological, delivery and financial requirements.
