Self-propelled cutter suction dredgers
IHC Merwede supplies self-propelled cutter suction dredgers that can be used for major reclamation projects and port construction work. These vessels move from project to project throughout the world without the need of an accompanying transportation ship.
Two of the most renowned examples are the ATHENA and the D’ARTAGNAN. The ATHENA is a self-propelled cutter suction dredger, built with a new design philosophy, that features upgraded barge-loading and flexible spud systems, allowing for operations in rougher weather. While the D’ARTAGNAN had its bow on the side of the cutterladder, the ATHENA’s bow is on the side of the spud poles.

Versatility
Self-propelled cutter suction dredgers are specially equipped for working with different soil types. They have maximal operating flexibility and can be used for major reclamation projects and construction work.
Such versatility is due in part to the vessels’ wide-ranging characteristics. These include varying discharge distances and dredging depths, and the ability to operate in extreme temperatures. High levels of autonomy and self-propulsion also contribute to their flexibility, because they have minimal dependency on local facilities.
Maximised production
The dimensions of self-propelled cutter suction dredgers can be determined to improve the vessel’s performance in swell. They are also designed with a large pump capacity to reduce costs per cubic metre. Self-propelled cutter suction dredgers can be fitted with high levels of automation, including a combined navigation/dredging console and sophisticated dredging automation and cutter control to maximise production.
Environmentally friendly
Lubrication is reduced to an absolute minimum on self-propelled cutter suction dredgers, such as the ATHENA, which means they are also environmentally friendly. The significant sustainable innovation on this vessel is found in the cutter ladder, as all cutter shaft bearings are fully water lubricated.
Large pump capacity
The ATHENA is notable for other reasons too. It is one of the
world’s most powerful self-propelled cutter suction dredgers, with a total installed power of 24,700kW, a length of more than 130 metres and a maximum dredging depth of 25 metres.
It was designed and built with one clear goal: to optimise the efficiency of production. Equipped with the latest dredging technology – suitable for working in hard soil – it is also one of the three largest cutter suction dredgers in the world.
