Kanrin Maru

Orders of a quite different nature were received from Nagasaki Holland Village, the open-air museum in Japan, to build replicas of two sailing ships that had played an important part in the history of both Japan and Holland. Kanrin Maru was a 19th century Japanese trading vessel, the first to be built outside Japan, and the first Japanese ship to call at a port in the USA (San Francisco). In the year 1600 the Dutch trader De Liefde was the first ever foreign ship permitted to trade in Japanese territories. This historical event was the start of the adventures described in James Clavell’s novel Shogun.
