The IMO 2 type product tanker Theodora was built for Dutch carrier Theodora Tankers. She is designed to transport heated liquid products, including bitumen, coal-tar, and pitch. The Theodora was the first vessel of its kind fitted out with independent insulated tanks that can freely expand and shrink within the hull construction. This construction allows cargo with temperatures of up to 250ºC to be carried which is substantially higher than any other systems in operation while the insulated tanks minimise heat transfer reducing fuel costs for heating and heat strain to the ship structure.
