Naming and launch of the 5,600 m³ TSHD ARTEVELDE
Category: Press release
The naming and launch of the 5,600 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger the ARTEVELDE took place at the IHC Beaver Dredgers yard in Sliedrecht on Friday, 19 December 2008. The ship is being built for the Belgian contractor DEME N.V. (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering N.V.). The ceremony was conducted by Mrs. C. Hecquet, the wife of Mr. Y. Windelincx, the Director-General of the Nationale Delcrederedienst (the Belgian Export Credit Agency).
IHC Dredgers B.V. and DEME N.V. signed the contract for the construction of the ARTEVELDE in December 2007. The construction work was sub-contracted to IHC Beaver Dredgers and the keel was laid on 24 April 2008. The ARTEVELDE is a sister ship of the highly successful REYNAERT, which was built earlier in Kinderdijk.

The ARTEVELDE is ideal both for working in shallow waters and for the maintenance of harbours, beach replenishment and land reclamation projects. The ship is designed for a high degree of versatility, for example by keeping the weight of the ship relatively low while maximising hopper capacity. The maximum hopper capacity of 8,190 tons at a draught of only 7.10 m results in a density of 1.50 ton/m³ of dredged material in the hopper. This means that the ship can achieve a clear ecological difference by comparison with equivalent trailing suction hopper dredgers. The ship is equipped with the latest generation of one-man operated bridge. The steering and dredging operations on the vessel can be controlled using four screens and an extremely compact operating desk.
The ARTEVELDE is a twin-screw trailing suction hopper dredger. She is equipped with a suction pipe on the port side with an inner diameter of 1,000 mm, allowing for dredging to a maximum depth of 33 m. The dredged material can be discharged through two rows of rectangular bottom doors. The load can also be discharged by means of a self-emptying system, in which the dredged material is pumped ashore through a floating pipeline or discharged through a spraying nozzle by "rainbowing". The ship has accommodation for a crew of fourteen.
